More About Cholesterol: Definitions and Explanations

What is Cholesterol and When is it Good or Bad?

Cholesterol is a soft, waxy substance found among fats circulating in your bloodstream and in all of your body’s cells. You can get cholesterol in two ways. Your body makes some and the rest comes from eating animal products you eat such as meat, poultry, eggs, butter, fish and dairy products. You don’t get cholesterol from eating plant foods.

In order for the cholesterol to be transported in the blood without floating around, your liver coats with a layer of protein called lipoprotein. Most of the cholesterol is carried by low-density lipoprotein (LDL): this is the bad guy. About a third to a quarter of your blood is carried by high-density lipoprotein (HDL): this is the good guy.

Too much LDL cholesterol in the blood can lead to various health problems including heart disease, stroke, thinning and clogging of the arteries (called atherosclerosis). On the other hand, HDL cholesterol actually helps remove bad cholesterol from the blood; the, reason it’s called good cholesterol. Sort of like the good guys kicking out the bad guys.

How Much Cholesterol Do You Need to Stay Healthy?

Blood cholesterol is measured in milligrams of per deciliter (mg/dl) of blood. It usually comes in two numbers: your total cholesterol (LDL+HDL) and a separate number for LDL. In general, a total blood cholesterol level below 200 mg/dl is desirable. 200-239 mg/dl is borderline high. Over 240 mg/dl is high.

An LDL level of 100 mg/dl or less is considered optimal. 100-129 mg/dl is still good. 130-159 mg/dl is borderline high. 160-189 mg/dl is high. 190 mg/dl and above is very high.

What Are the Causes of High Cholesterol?

Some of the main high cholesterol causes include:

  • Genetics: Some of us inherit a predisposition toward high cholesterol
  • Hormonal imbalances
  • Diet: Eating foods that are high in saturated fats
  • Lack of exercise or physical activity
  • Age and gender: Blood cholesterol tends to rise as we age. It is usually higher in men until after menopause when women’s cholesterol levels tend to rise to that of men of similar age.
  • Excess body weight and obesity
  • Smoking and excessive alcohol intake

Triglycerides: What They are and Why They Occur

As if we don’t have not enough to worry about already, there is also something called triglycerides. Your body stores fat in the form of triglycerides. People with high triglycerides often have a higher total cholesterol level, including a high LDL (bad) level, and a low HDL (good) level.

Since triglycerides are stored in fat, elevated levels often occur in people who are overweight or obese. They also occur in people who smoke, consume excess alcohol, are physically inactive, or whose diet is too high in carbohydrates.

Triglyceride levels too are measured in milligrams per deciliter of blood (mg/dl). Less than 150 mg/dl is normal; 150-199 mg/dl is borderline high. 200-499 mg/dl is high; and 500 mg/dl is very high.

It is crucial that you keep your cholesterol and triglyceride levels within healthy ranges. Here again are our top choices in natural cholesterol supplements:
