We live in an ever-busy world. Then along comes the drive-through (or drive-thru) restaurant came along and… well, the rest is history. Suffice it to say they are a convenience. However, they typically don’t offer much in way of healthy choices. But things are changing.
By the way, drive-throughs of any kind are not as common in other countries as they are in the United States. Logistical challenges (stone buildings are not as easy to modify, for example) and less of a car culture.
Organic Drive Through Restaurant
By their very nature, drive-through restaurants are of the fast-food variety. These are not known for offering healthy choices. In fact, they have virtually become synonymous with greasy, unhealthy and cheap. But healthy, organic choices may be coming soon to a drive-through near you.
The country’s first organic drive-through restaurant opened its doors recently in California. And, as it appears, it is doing well. Lines are, reportedly, out the door.
Amy’s Organic Drive-Thru restaurant opened in Rohnert Park, California. The restaurant offers an all-vegetarian menu including veggie burgers, salads, and even mac n’ cheese. Flavors are both regular and vegan.
The company is not exactly a start-up, as their signature pizza is said to be a top seller in health food and grocery stores countrywide. As would be expected, the pizza is now a feature in the restaurant. Only that you now get it piping hot. If only I lived somewhere close.
Reviews having been raving, with many stating they are excited to see huge crowds. It is reminiscent of other chains that have changed the food system such as chipotle and Mexican Grill.
“Five days in and they can barely keep up with demand,” reported ABC-7 about Amy’s first week in business.
Personally, I would wish they included some organic meat choices. Of course, these can cost a pretty buck. Speaking of which, while I hope the prices are affordable, obviously this would be not be a restaurant you expect to eat on the cheap. Even as you can buy organic on a budget, organic food is not cheap.
Of course, copycats will follow, sooner than later if the restaurant’s success continues.
