Her face is probably familiar. She has become the face health and weight loss fake news all over social media. Countless media ads use her photos including “before and after” to promote (often dubious) weight loss systems and products. Her name is Gabourey Sidibe or simply “Gabby”.
Gabourey Sidibe is an American actress who made her debut in the 2009 movie Precious, in a role that brought an academy awards nomination and fame. She has since appeared in various TV shows including Fox musical drama Empire in which plays Becky Williams.
Like many overweight personalities in the limelight, Sidibe has been subjected to humiliation. She has even been offered scripts that fitted her body, with some calling her names such as “pig” and “elephant”
Of course, this does not mean only those in the public eye get mistreated for being overweight or obese. Unfortunately, fame can and does make it worse.
The 33 year old actress (at time of this post) who recently underwent weight loss surgery was quoted as saying;
“I get a lot of scripts and offers where someone has to make mention of my body immediately. Someone wrote a script with me in mind and the first time someone other than my character was talking about my character, they say ‘this hippo’ or ‘this elephant.’ ”
All the same, Sidibe is also much loved and respected for confidently and unapologetically embracing her body. This is not to say she fully accepted it. As a last resort, she opted for bariatric surgery. In her own words;
“The surgery wasn’t the easy way out. I wasn’t cheating by getting it done. I wouldn’t have been able to lose as much as I’ve lost without it.”
Having struggled with her weight since she was a child, it’s not hard to understand her decision. Those who’ve struggled with weight, including myself, can relate. I’m grateful that I did not have to go the surgery route.
Since undergoing bariatric surgery, some say her transformation is amazing. While she does not exactly look like a supermodel, she has lost a significant amount weight. She may not be attractive to those who have a thing for BBW (big and beautiful women), but to the rest of us she looks great.
Unfortunately, haters will always be around and will always hate. Sidibe says she’s still dealing with them.
