One grandma (or is it great grandma) is about to prove to you that age is just a number. Not only that, she also living proof it’s never too late. Meet Ernestine Shepherd, an 80 year old woman bodybuilder who is becoming an inspiration to all, young and old. Watch this video:

What’s unusual and even more inspiring is that the fact Shepherd has no athletic background. The ripped 80 year old started training at age 71! Many older bodybuilders usually have some athletics or fitness background.

Muscle Mass And Aging

The question as to whether one can build muscle at middle age or over pops up often. Shepherd proves you can. And science supports this.

The process of bulking up differs in older adults than in the young. After we reach middle age, some of our muscle fibers die, especially if we were not physically active. We can lose up to 40 percent of our muscle fiber by the time we are 80. Others remain alive but shrink or atrophy.[1]

But the good thing is, we can still build muscle even at an advanced age. It may not be as easy as in young people, but it can be done. It’s never too late to get started, but the sooner you start the better. Now, go lift some iron if you don’t already.
