The first thing is to understand the value of these supplements. This means what is included in the product as well as what it does for you. You have heard all the good things about omega-3 fatty acids can do for you. These include:

  • Supporting mental health and brain function: Multiple studies have shown that children may improve their learning skills when on a diet high in omega-3 or supplementing with these fats.[3] They may also help prevent other mental conditions and diseases such as Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), Alzheimer’s disease and even depression.
  • Boost immune function: Researchers from Michigan State University feeding on a diet high in omega-3 fatty acids may boost activity of a white blood cell called a B cell, a vital part of the body’s immune response.[4]

So, How Do You Find The Best Omega-3 Supplements?

What is important to know is the compounds that offer these benefits, which is what you should look for and avoid mistakes people make when buying supplements.

To simplify, and cut a long-winded explanation short, the two most important compounds of omega-3 supplements are DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) and EPA (Eicosapentaenoic acid). These are what you should pay attention to when buying an omega-3 supplement.

Mistake #1: Not reading the label: Needs no explaining.

What to do instead: A savvy supplement buyer should always read the label including the fine print. The label in the picture above is real, on a supplement I picked up at the store.

Mistake #2: Not knowing what to look for: Similar to not reading the label, it is not much help if you don’t know what you want or, conversely, what you do not want.

What to do instead: If you read through the whole article so far, you already know that you want high levels of DHA and EPA in your omega-3 supplement. Pay attention to the quantities listed. You also want the supplement to contain at least 50% omega-3 oils. You don’t want a lot of useless filler (I don’t have to tell you what such filler can do to your alimentary frequencies).

Mistake #3: Buying omega-3 supplements from your local pharmacy or store: Contrary to many a person’s belief, big brand-name mass-marketing products – such as shown above – do not always make the best omega-3 supplements.

What to do instead: Do your due diligence and read up on any and every supplement you intend to start using. Reading supplement reviews such you will find on this site will give you some insights. So, what is wrong with the label above? It does not list DHA and EPA amounts! For all we know, it could contain but a smattering. That you get 20% more free is not much help as you don’t know what you are getting anyway.
