CoQ10 and Omega 3 Supplementation May Benefit Prostate Health

Fish oill pillsTwo supplements often classified as super-supplements. Yet more evidence is emerging to indicate that when used together, coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10 for short) and omega-3 can do the body a lot of good. According to a recent study, the duo may even have benefits for prostrate health.

The recent study included 504 healthy men with serum PSA levels lower or equal to 2.5 nanograms per milliliter. The participants were randomly assigned to one of four groups. Each group corresponded to a different supplement, either omega-6 fatty acids, omega-3 fatty acids, CoQ10 or placebo. The men took two pills daily for 12 weeks.

Researchers took serum PSA levels prior to and after the study. The groups taking omega-3 fatty acids and CoQ10 had significantly lower PSA levels, compared to before supplementation. Conversely, the group consuming omega-6 fatty acids experienced a significant increase in PSA levels. See original story

The study does not seem to specify what types of CoQ10 or omega-3 supplements were used. CoQ10 supplements come in either ubiquinone or ubiqunol.

Of the two, the ubiquinol is said to be the more effective one and the best CoQ10 supplements are contain this. Ubiquinone has to be converted into ubiquinol in the body to get the benefits, but for those over 40 the conversion is not very effective. Most CoQ10 supplements contain ubiquinone, as it is cheaper than ubiquinol. Cheaper also means lower quality in virtually anything.

Omega-3 is a little more complicated in that you can get it from plant or animal sources. Plant sources of omega-3 such as walnuts, flaxseeds and sunflower seeds provide a type known as alpha-linolenic acid (ALA). Cold water fish such as salmon, tuna and mackerel provide eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). Sea algae supplies DHA. Many experts concur that DHA is the most important of these three fatty acids.

You can omega-3 and CoQ10 take these separately or find a supplement with both. Our choice CoQ10 and omega-3 combo supplement contains the superior ingredients, ubiquinol and DHA. The oil helps protect CoQ10 in the digestive system thus improving bioavailability.
