How to Maintain the Health of Your Teeth and Gums

By Kathy Jenkins

While everyone should visit the dentist at least once per year, it's getting more and more expensive to have even the simplest procedures done. Cleaning your teeth, getting cavities filled are hardly cheap and if you need something more complicated like a root canal or crown you'd better be ready to pay a hefty sum. That's why you're better off protecting your dental health in as many ways as possible, so when you do see your dentist, you won't have to empty out your bank account or max out your credit card.

Junk food is not only bad for your whole body, it can contribute to tooth decay. Carbonated drinks are one of the worst culprits here, and drinking soda regularly is a major cause of cavities and other dental problems. Even though it's well known that sugar can cause damage to the teeth, many people still consume sweets in large quantities. Sweets, of course, not only contribute to cavities, but can cause a variety of other problems, such as obesity and mood swings. Smoking is another habit that can not only stain your teeth, but cause gum disease and tooth decay. Most of the foods and substances that are bad for your teeth are unhealthy in other ways too, so by limiting or eliminating these things from your diet your whole body will benefit.

During the last few years, the health benefits of green tea have received lots of publicity, and it now turns out that consuming green tea is even good for your teeth and gums.

You can find herbal toothpastes and mouthwashes that contain green tea, and while these can be beneficial, it's even better to simply drink green tea or take a supplement containing it. Studies have shown that people who drink green tea regularly have healthier teeth and gums than people who don't. This is one of many reasons why it's a good idea to consume this natural substance, as the powerful antioxidants contained in green tea are good for you in many ways.

The active ingredient in most toothpastes is fluoride, but many health experts believe that fluoride may have harmful side effects, especially in large quantities. Recently, even mainstream researchers have been expressing concern over the widespread use of fluoride in water. There are alternatives to fluoride based toothpastes, and these usually contain herbs that are useful for preventing tooth decay. You may also want to look into ayurvedic herbs and toothpastes, which are all natural and have been used in India for thousands of years. The neem twig is a traditional remedy for preventing tooth and gum disease and is one of the main ingredients in many ayurvedic toothpastes. It's also beneficial to chew on neem twigs to maintain healthy teeth and gums.

You can keep your teeth and gums healthier by being more attentive to your daily habits and diet. The recommendations covered in this article can help save you quite a bit in dental bills if you follow them regularly. In some cases, you may need dental procedures to correct various problems, but in general the best approach is prevention.
