What Causes Constipation? – 3 Typical Reasons

Constipation means that an individual is being affected by sparse bowel movements. It is understandable that these kinds of ailments are usually rather embarrassing for those who suffer from them. Even so, constipation is a common ailment among people of all ages.

Every year, as many as 4 million people in the USA have problems with constipation. There are many factors that have contributed to constipation. So, how to define the causes of constipation and why many persons have this ailment?

As food is processed through our digestive system, it's the job of the colon to extract water from the matter. This process works on timing. The matter regularly takes a regular period of time to run the length of the colon, and the colon extracts water at a regular rate. Constipation occurs when this food matter takes too long to proceed through the colon.

The colon does not regulate the quantity of water it extracts, so at the end there's nothing but a hardened stool. The real question of what causes constipation is what causes the food matter to move slowly through the colon. Below are the most typical causes.

Medication

With the increase in prescribed drugs in our society, it is no surprise that they may have some unintended negative effects when taken or combined with other medications. For some medications, constipation is a known side effect. Finding alternatives to certain medications may help relieve constipation.

Eating Routine

One of the primary causes of many ailments is diet. The body is a machine, so it makes sense that what we fuel it with has impact on how the body performs.

Foods which are overly processed or a diet high in dairy products can increase the chances of constipation. Altering your diet to include more fiber and adding fruits and veggies to your daily intake can often cure constipation.

Laxatives should be a last-ditch effort, but are often taken as a first attempt without fixing the root cause of the problem. Abuse of laxatives can increase the severity of constipation which can lead to a more invasive procedure to cure the ailment.

Retaining Stool

If you feel the urge, you shouldn't ignore it. Our body knows when we must have a bowel movement. Ignoring this can be the main reason for your constipation, and you can't blame anything or anyone else but yourself. Leaving stool sitting in the colon it continuously removes water resulting very hard and dry stool.

Solving your constipation problems could be as easy as adjusting your lifestyle and eating habits. Using only fast solutions (laxatives) could cause more serious issues in the long run. That is why it is essential to find the root cause of your condition and use mainly natural home remedies for constipation.
